The HMP Mafia: still going strong in Southeast Michigan

Ever since Ben wrote his entertaining entry, he'd ask me every time we were both on gchat: "When are you writing in the bloggity blog?? Did you write yet?" Well, I am finally here!

My fellowship is with Trinity Health and I chose to work at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, MI and am living in Kerrytown. Staying in SE MI and living in AA is great - last week I ran the Big House Big Heart 10K, which is a run that starts right outside the Big House and finishes by running through the tunnel with the fight song playing, and looping around onto the 50-yd line. I know a handful of other alums ran it too, like Heather, Safia and Molly! And two weeks ago, Safia, Dave and I biked in the Tour De Troit - a 30-mile police escorted historic bike ride in the D which raises money for greenways - it was awesome! Dave was sporting his SPH hoodie and actually met quite a few SPH people. A girl pointed at his sweatshirt and said to her friend: "LOOK!" Her friend said, "you can't just point at people..." We looked at her questioningly and found out she is an HMP first year haha.

The fellowship is going well. I have presented a few times and this month I will be traveling to Chicago for Trinity's Clinical Conference where they bring all the hospitals together to talk about best practices, etc. I will also be traveling to Boise where we have 4 hospitals to help out with their EHR implementation. Trinity has had their own EHR system for years and recognizes there needs to be a cultural change before going live with their system so they have been deliberate in their go-live stages in their system. Everyone reacts negatively to Boise as if it were a totally uncool place to go to, but I'm pretty excited about this. I'm spending the following weekend there doing outdoor activities - hiking, ziplining and hot springs!

Trinity also has several alums and it is great meeting all of them. Since it's a Catholic health system, the meetings usually start with a reflection, usually about important values and rarely biblical. While I was in the monthly Michigan CEO meeting this past week, one HMP alum did a reflection on teamwork. Then he threw in a second reflection where he shared about how he and his friends worked together to paint Sparty. Someone else remarked, "ohhh so this has to do with teamwork? I see the connection..." He was pretty successful - it involved throwing eggs full of paint (most of them landed on the people guarding the statue) and driving away just as the Spartans got to them. He finished the story with:" I just wanted to share that it IS possible to paint Sparty, and it will probably happen again when my son goes to Michigan." hahaha.

My preceptor mentioned we should probably add an item onto the November agenda to which the regional CEO proclaimed, "That is John Griffith Day." On that note, I hope everyone comes back for JRG's retirement bash, it should be lots of fun!

Hopefully more people will write on the blog - it would be great to hear how everyone is doing! :)
